Research Seed Funding Initiative for Military Personnel and Their Families

The Office of the Senior Vice President for Research and the Social Science Research Institute are pleased to announce the availability of up to $200,000 for the development of new research programs on the health and well-being of military personnel and their families.

The military engagements in Iraq and Afghanistan have resulted in new challenges for enlisted, reserve, and National Guard members and their families. All branches of the military are seeking new knowledge and programs to improve the readiness of military personnel to deal with these challenges.

Priority will be given high quality research projects with prospects for external funding. The SSRI criteria for Level 1 and Level 2 projects will be used to evaluate the scientific quality of proposals (see http://www.ssri.psu.edu/funding/), and proposals also will be reviewed for their applicability to the needs of military personnel and families by Ron Madrid, Director of the Office of Military and Security Programs, and Peter Schiffer, Associate Vice President for Research. Funds should be used for research support (not outreach or administrative activities), with the expected deliverable of proposals for external funding.

The first deadline for Level 2 proposals (up to $20,000) on Military Personnel Families is March 1, 2009. Proposals also can be submitted for SSRI's October 5, 2009 or January 18, 2010 Level 2 due dates.

Level 1 proposals (up to $5,000) may be submitted at any time.
