We will be holding C-SoDA's final end of semester brownbag. A light lunch will be provided at 12:15 pm and the brownbag to start at 12:30 pm. Graduate students in SoDA, Cayley Ryan, Joseph Gianni Guerriero, Jiahui Xu, Kira England, and Min Kimwill, be presenting, their talk is titled: "Capturing a half-century of change: Trends in measures of U.S. state-level racial inequality from 1977 to 2022”. The objectives of the C-SoDA brownbag series are to provide (1) valuable feedback on work in progress, and (2) a space for members of the C-SoDA community to connect. The C-SoDA brownbag session includes approximately 30 min each of presentation and Q&A. Abstract: Contextual racial equality, especially at the state level, is a central focus of research and policy in the US. While research on contextual inequality increasingly recognizes the importance of having multiple measures to capture its multi-dimensional nature, few studies have evaluated the degree to which these measures change over time within states and between states. The objective of the brownbag presentation is twofold: First, we present a novel database tracking state- and county-level measures (e.g., educational attainment, income, homeownership, voting participation) of racial inequality from 1977 to 2022. Using two-way ANOVA and joinpoint regression, we illustrate the large variation in levels of inequality both between states and over time. This study underscores the importance of considering longitudinal and place-based approaches to the measurement of racial inequality and related outcomes. Second, we demonstrate how to merge the contextual data with individual-level data (e.g., the Current Population Survey) and analyze them using multilevel models. |
