Title: From vaccine coverage to vaccine impact
Abstract: Vaccination is among the most successful and cost-effective public health interventions. A recent analysis estimated that the WHO’s Expanded Program on Immunization has prevented 153 million deaths over 50 years. To arrive at this number requires estimating 3 challenging quantities: the coverage of vaccination, the burden of disease that occurred, and the burden of disease that would have occurred in the absence of vaccination. I will present examples of work I have developed over the last 20 years to estimate each of these quantities in the context of measles and rubella.
