Faculty Development Keynote and Small Group Workshop on Depolarizing Dialogue

SSRI is delighted to welcome, Lara Schwartz, founding director of the Project on Civic Dialogue at American University on Thursday, September 24 at the Nittany Lion Inn at State College, PA from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Part of the Initiative for Faculty Success & Equity (IFSE) Keynote Speaker Series, the presentation will feature a Q & A discussion on fostering civic dialogue, constructive disagreement, and meaningful engagement across disciplines.

Available in-person and via Zoom for remote participants. In-person participants (Limit 55 attendees) are also welcome to join us for lunch followed by an interactive in-person workshop on course design for civic dialogue and civil discourse (across the disciplines) facilitated by Lara Schwartz

Faculty Course Design Workshop (About 90 minutes after lunch)- Topics Addressed Include:

• Depolarized course design and classroom facilitation
• Viewing dialogue across differences as opportunities to achieve shared aspirations
• Shifting our primary dialogic competency from speaking to listening
• Techniques to foster engaged classrooms and learning communities
• Civic engagement and dialogue across the curriculum
• Designing assessments and course discussions
• Infusing civic dialogue into existing classes
• Listening and disagreement as essential civic skills
